Here in New York City the heroism and selflessness of so many individuals continues daily, as frontline workers treat the ill and care for our community at great risk to themselves. These grants are intended for both new and emerging organizations as well as established movement builders with a track record of success. In this application period, the Let Us Breathe Fund will prioritize first-time grant-seekers to North Star Fund. Current grantees of the Let Us Breathe Fund will receive renewal support automatically without submitting an application. The organization acted quickly to partner with other Upper West Side and Bronx-based organizations and are now serving more people than ever. As part of our immediate response to the pandemic, the Foundation provided $1MM in relief to the Greater New York Hospital Association (GNYHA) for direct distribution to city hospitals hardest hit by the pandemic. We gave a $1MM grant to NYU Langone Medical Center also to help alleviate the burden on essential workers during this emergency. During the racial and civil unrest of the Summer of 2020, the Foundation sent funds to North Star, for their distribution to Let Us Breathe, the only NYC-based fund led by and for Black activists.

By enhancing connections to LYNX rail and constructing a new bicycle and pedestrian trail, the project supports quality of life by providing more transportation options. By constructing the new transit hub underground, the project supports additional development in a dense and transit-rich area of Charlotte, increasing environmental sustainability and economic competitiveness.

At the conclusion of the grants period, grantees are expected, upon request, to submit an accounting of all disbursements and a narrative report comparing accomplishments with objectives. This enables North Star to fulfill its mission as a voice for the values of equality, economic justice, and peace. North Star Fund provides grants to organizations whose missions are to advance grassroots organizing—the process of building collective power so that communities impacted by injustice can make systemic change. Grantees can articulate the root causes of the injustices, pointing to systems and policies affecting their community. These organizations see community members impacted by this injustice as essential stakeholders, from whom they recruit leaders and seek stories, ideas, campaign strategy, and organizational direction. These organizations have a vision for systemic change that is connected to campaigns to undo or replace specific laws and systems that create inequity. These organizations can identify policymakers, decision-makers, or institutional targets in their campaigns.

A strong social justice vision also means that we keep the blame for unjust policies where it belongs – on the decision makers and institutions creating and enforcing those policies. We avoid funding organizations that encourage people impacted by injustice to change their behavior or identity to avoid prejudice. For example, the responsibility to end police violence lies with the police, not with the clothing choices of young men of color.
Grants to New York nonprofit organizations in eligible locations to address systemic racism, discrimination against Black communities, and police accountability. Priority will be given to first-time applicants, as well as to Black-led organizations.
